Do you ever find yourself craving sweets or chocolates, telling yourself ‘just one more’ but can’t seem to stop? Do you wish you had more control? Does it make you feel guilty or frustrated when ‘you do it again’?
You're not alone. Read on to uncover the secrets behind your cravings and how to manage them.
Cravings: More than Just Willpower
Contrary to popular belief, cravings are not just about willpower. Cravings are signals from your body and mind, indicating deeper needs.
1. Nutritional Needs:
Cravings often point to nutritional imbalances. Lack of nutrients such as protein, healthy fats, or essential vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, zinc can trigger them. Dehydration, poor sleep, restrictive diets are also common culprits.
Tip: Keep a food diary. Don't skip meals. Stay hydrated. Watch your sleep habits. Eat a balanced diet rich in whole foods and prioritise protein, fiber and healthy fats. This can naturally help reduce cravings.
2. Emotional Needs:
Cravings are closely tied to our emotions. They can be a response to emotional stress or unaddressed feelings. Cravings and 'uncontrolled eating' can also be a form of distraction or self-protection from underlying emotional challenges, including past hurts or current stressors.
Tip: Reflect on your emotions when cravings hit. How do you feel? What do you need? What's bothering you or stressing you out right now? Is your craving linked to stress, sadness or boredom? Consider journaling, meditation or exercise as alternative coping mechanisms to get relief without turning to food.
Understanding and Compassion Are Key
Approach cravings with understanding and compassion. Seeking comfort in food is a natural human behaviour. Rather than judging yourself, focus on understanding the real causes behind your cravings.
Take the First Step Towards Balance and Control
Understanding your cravings is the beginning. Overcoming them requires practice, patience and adequate support. It's a journey of transforming your eating habits and your relationship with food and yourself.
